A Double Story George MacDonald 9781444427653 Books
A Double Story is a fairytale about two girls born in another time and another place - one a princess, one a pauper. Their connection is through a mysterious woman who uses fantastical methods to try to help them see and overcome the selfishness in their hearts. The surprises throughout the story prove that this is not your typical fairytale.I loved this quote: "...one of the sheep-dogs, who was called Prince, and whom I shall not refer to with a WHICH, because he was a very superior animal indeed, even for a sheep-dog, which is the most intelligent of dogs...Thus was the princess provided with a dog for a private tutor - just the right sort for her."
This may have been written for children, but is not a childish story. There is so much wisdom to be gleaned for all of us; a must read for parents, grandparents, teachers and bibliophiles!

A Double Story George MacDonald 9781444427653 Books Reviews
Once again MacDonald has somehow pierced my own heart with the light of truth. It is with sadness I see I am too much like the wretched characters in this book. Lord, please mend me.
Good read!
Ahh, this fast became my favorite of his books. The lovely lessons with the two children and the wise woman reveal Christ seeking the lost and transforming hearts with His love. Definitely will re-read this one many times.
(This story has also been published under the titles, "The Lost Princess" and "The Wise Woman.") Two little girls One a princess, the other a shepherd's daughter; both with parents too "kindhearted" to properly discipline them. Can the Wise Woman help them?
What a beautiful allegory! This truly is a story with a double meaning of how God calls us even when we are miserable selfish people and grows us through the trials and consequences of our choices. With the results of our growth being our decision - because He doesn't force us against our wills; He provides us many an opportunity to become more like Him.
On the surface this is a story of two bratty girls and the consequences of the choices they make when a Wise Woman tries to help them become 'nice'. But, look behind this surface story at your own heart and journey with God, and you will be humbled and blessed!
I was feeling a little inundated by all the technology flooding our household, and decided to take a step back with George MacDonald. Only one mind you, I did buy it on my ! Anyway, I had to explain the no pictures problem to my children, but they picked up on it quickly. He is such a descriptive writer, and the story is very relatable and can be a very good learning tool if you have anyone who is acting up. Definite recommendation, as well as his The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie!
The book was not a long read, but the narrator, whoever it is, is a great story-teller and the story though a bit confusing in places, kept my attention and enticed my finishing it.
Moral lessons abound, but I would not categorize this is a "children's story" where most morality lessons are taught. This one is good for anyone who reads it. The only reason I didn't give it a five-star review was because some of the errors distracted a bit and the narration--as stated is a bit confusing.
This is not a typical, "they lived happily ever after" kind of book, though the reader will know that a sequel is not out of the question.
I loved the "old folk tale" feel of the story-telling and I travelled with the characters on their journey and wanted to knock some sense into the two special gilrs and their parents. Trying not to give the story away.
Bravo!
